Historic Marley Estate Home in Nassau, The Bahamas

“La Randa” located on the eastern end of Nassau, The Bahamas has been listed for sale with the international firm Engel & Völkers.

The home is currently owned by Rita Marley, the late Bob Marley’s wife, and part of the legendary Bob Marley & The Wailers. Originally born in Santiago de Cuba in July of 1946 Rita Marley came with her family to Jamaica when she was a toddler. She was a singer and manager of the Soulettes, the group that later became the i-Threes and were backup vocalists for Bob Marley & The Wailers. She married Bob Marley in 1966.

Mrs. Marley was initially drawn to La Randa by its charm and instantly fell in love with it. The description on Engel & Völkers Bahamas website reads, “La Randa is a home that has a unique story to tell. Authentic architectural features are reflective of a commitment to its history, and perfectly embodies this one of a kind brick beauty.

An original brace barn door welcomes you into a foyer and corridor with a barrel vault ceiling. Entertain in grand style in the generously-sized living/dining room area which is graced by a lovely fireplace and hardwood floors.”

The property has stories passed down from previous owners that date back to the Great Hurricane of 1929. Building codes were not what they are today and because of its brick structure, the home was used as a shelter and is said to be one of two homes in the area left intact after the storm.

The house is also said to have been built by a well-known rum runner. The Bahamas was a key smuggling route during US prohibition in the 1920s to early 1930s. “Under the house was a tunnel that came from the sea and led to the basement of La Randa. The brick walls and tavern-like windows in the basement level of the house certainly inspire the imagination,” says listing agent Silvina Andrews.

In addition to the unique and authentic features of the home, the firm has arranged membership for the next owners at the nearby Palm Cay which has an award-winning marina and private beach club with amenities such as tennis courts, gym, and spa.

Andrews says, “The property is one of kind. Whether you want something authentic to build an island lifestyle around or operate a vacation home that stands out with tremendous marketing potential, this is a real gem. A new owner can apply for the Historic Register which would allow for the exemption of real property tax.”
