Fit Living in the Bahamas

Picture your life in The Bahamas and it might involve an image of you on your shaded verandah, sipping an icy-cold cocktail, overlooking an empty beach and a twinkling ocean. Ultimate relaxation. But where was I…

Ah yes, fitness. Because as much as it is most certainly that, The Bahamas is not only a place to kick back and let life’s cares wash away. It also offers the chance to engage in a variety of sporting pursuits which can be a fun and healthy way to enjoy your free time while you are in the islands – and we’re not only talking about the more traditional sports fishing, boating, and diving you might have had in mind. If you’re an active person who enjoys getting your heart rate up on the weekend or diving into a bit of thrill-seeking, your interests are well catered to.

Here’s a selection of some of Engel Völkers Bahamas favorite outdoor events in The Bahamas:

Marathon Bahamas

Last event – January 20th, 2020
Next event – January 18-20th, 2020
The Marathon Bahamas, which includes a full marathon and half marathon event, has gone from strength to strength since its inception seven years ago. The flat, scenic route allows you to take in some of the best coastal views of Nassau as you battle it out for the finish line. A great, family-friendly atmosphere with competitors of all ages, sizes and levels of seriousness, it’s also a Boston marathon-qualifier event, for those into that sort of thing. Each year it attracts a growing number of local and international participants, making it a great way to meet a diverse crowd of people.

Ride for Hope

Last Event – March 10th, 2019
Next Event – March 14th, 2020
If long-distance cycling and/or charity fundraising is your thing, put this well-organised event in your calendar. This Ride for Hope has become a mainstay for many locals and ex-pats alike over the years. Originally hosted on the quaint island of Eleuthera, it has recently moved to Nassau, allowing more people to participate and becoming the one day of the year when bicycles rule the capital’s roads.

And on the subject of cycling
The Enjoy! Cycling Club is a group of biking enthusiasts in New Providence who meet six out of seven days of the week in the mornings and afternoons for long distance rides around the island. Do this on a regular basis and you’ll be in tip top shape in no time (and feeling less guilty the next time you indulge in some of the Bahamas’ many rich culinary offerings).

Potcake Man Triathlon

Last event – February 10th, 2019
The triathlon scene has expanded rapidly in The Bahamas in recent years, with an ever growing number of converts and events – and why not? When you’ve got waters like those in The Bahamas to train in, it hardly seems like exercise anymore! Evidence of the popularity of these triathlons can be seen not only in their growing participation but also recent attendance by top celebrities including tennis champion Serena Williams along with best friend and former world number one tennis player, Caroline Wozniacki. Each event draws both serious athletes and those looking to have a bit of fun with the family and all include longer and shorter distance races and relays – meaning there’s no excuse not to get involved.

Bahamas Race for the Cure

Next event – January 18th, 2020
The Komen Bahamas Race for the Cure 5k is an opportunity for people of all ages to celebrate survivorship, remember those we have lost to the disease and make a difference in the fight against breast cancer. By participating in this event, you will help to raise awareness about a health issue that affects thousands of women in The Bahamas and will help make a difference in how breast cancer is understood, diagnosed and treated. 100 percent of the money raised by the Race for the Cure will remain in The Bahamas to fund breast cancer programming.
